Local (LocalWP) vs ReDock: two takes on local WordPress

LocalWP vs ReDock, compared fairly: LocalWP's WordPress polish and Windows support versus ReDock's native, multi-stack, agent-first approach.

LocalWP and ReDock both run WordPress on your machine, but they’re aimed at different developers. LocalWP is a WordPress-specialist tool with years of polish and cross-platform support; ReDock is a native macOS, multi-stack app that treats WordPress as one framework among several and makes the whole thing agent-operable. If your work is purely WordPress and you might need Windows, LocalWP is likely your answer. If you’re on a Mac, work across stacks, and want an agent to drive things, read on. This is a fair comparison, not a takedown.

What LocalWP does better

Credit where it’s due — LocalWP’s WordPress experience is excellent and hard to match:

  • WordPress polish. One-click WP installs, easy PHP-version switching per site, blueprints for reusable setups, and a mature, well-worn workflow. It’s been refined for years and it shows.
  • Windows and Linux. LocalWP runs beyond macOS. ReDock does not — it’s Mac only. If your team is mixed-OS, that alone can decide it.
  • Established ecosystem. Live Links, a big user base, lots of tutorials, and integrations built up over time. When you hit a problem, someone’s written about it.

If those are your priorities, LocalWP is a genuinely good tool and you should use it. This isn’t a case where the incumbent is coasting.

What ReDock does differently

ReDock’s bet is breadth, native feel, and agent control:

  • Native, small footprint. Built with Tauri and Rust, not Electron — fast launch and a light footprint, versus the heavier Electron shell.
  • Multi-stack, not WP-only. WordPress, headless WP, Astro, Next.js, Node, Bun, PHP, MySQL — plus n8n and Remotion — as local sites side by side. If a project mixes a WordPress backend with an Astro front end, both live in one app.
  • Agent/MCP-first. ReDock’s whole surface is MCP tools on localhost:47200, so Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, or the built-in agent can create a site, install a plugin, draft a post, or switch a plugin branch. A local-LLM catalog means no API keys required. See What is MCP?.
  • Honest state and clean uninstall. UI status reflects real state, runtimes install into ReDock’s own toolchain (never onto macOS), and uninstalling leaves your Mac clean.
  • Tunnels and deploys built in. Unlimited QuickShare plus 3 named redock.xyz subdomains that persist, and one-click Cloudflare Workers deploys with a free custom domain.

The WordPress-specific comparison

Both run real WordPress with real HTTPS locally. Where they diverge on WP:

  • Provisioning. Both make new WP sites easy. LocalWP’s blueprints are more mature; ReDock leans on the agent — “create a WordPress site, install these plugins, make these pages” is one instruction.
  • Versioning. ReDock does site-level git and one-click WordPress plugin branch switching — handy for trying a plugin change and rolling it back without a separate pipeline.
  • Operating the site. This is the sharpest difference. Through MCP, an agent can operate a ReDock-hosted WordPress site directly — content, plugins, options — with every change visible and reversible. LocalWP is operated by hand through the WP admin, which is exactly what many people want.

Neither approach is wrong. Agent operation suits people who like directing work in language; hands-on suits people who like clicking through wp-admin.

Choosing between them

  • Pure WordPress, need Windows, want the most refined WP-first tool? LocalWP.
  • On a Mac, multiple stacks, want agent/MCP control and built-in tunnels/deploys? ReDock.
  • Just want a stable local WP and already use LocalWP happily? No reason to switch.

ReDock is free. LocalWP has its own free tier. Price isn’t the deciding factor here — fit is.

For setup, /docs/install and /docs/first-site get you going. The broader field is in MAMP alternatives in 2026, and for PHP-heavy work see Laravel Herd vs ReDock.

FAQ

Can ReDock import an existing LocalWP site?

ReDock runs standard WordPress locally, so a normal WP export/import moves content between them. There’s no lock-in on the WordPress side — it’s real WordPress on both.

Does ReDock run on Windows like LocalWP?

No. ReDock is a native macOS app (macOS 12+). LocalWP’s cross-platform support is a real advantage if you need Windows or Linux.

Which is better for a WordPress-only freelancer?

If you’re Mac-only and want an agent to help build and version sites, ReDock fits well. If you need Windows or want the most mature WP-specific ecosystem, LocalWP is the safer call.
